Another blaze hits Kalihi area

Advertiser Staff

Firefighters today were trying to contain a small ridge-line brush fire in a remote area of Kalihi Valley, where they have been involved in fighting fires for 11 of the last 13 days.

About a half dozen firefighters from the Kalihi Uka engine company were taken to the area by helicopter at 6:36 a.m. At about 8:45 a.m., a fresh group of firefighters replaced them, HFD spokesman Capt. Richard Soo said.

The HFD helicopter was also making water drops to battle the fire, which is burning in a area thick with ironwood trees, Soo said.

At mid-morning, HFD had only the Kalihi Uka engine company, a tanker and helicopter at scene.
