THE LEFT LANE
Orthodontists pick unlikely poster boy

Advertiser Staff and News Services

The American Association of Orthodontists has used Tom Cruise' braces to plug the latest in teeth straightening.
Tom Cruise, the 40-year-old poster-boy celebrity for perfect teeth, just had his braces removed. But the American Association of Orthodontists is still using his clear-band experience in its marketing of trends in orthodontic treatment. The latest in the world of beautiful smiles: October is National Orthodontic Health Month, so dentists are touting, uh, recipes. The docs don't want braces-wearing trick-or-treaters to eat caramel apples, jelly beans or other sweets that will get stuck in their teeth. Suggested alternatives? Sugar cookies, pudding parfait and fruit cups. But there are special directions: Cookies should be broken into pieces to eat, rather than biting into them. And don't forget to floss.

Walk this way to help fight arthritis

"Walk this way." The phrase is an old, old joke but walking or performing any physical activity is no joke when you have arthritis. Still, the Arthritis Foundation is making use of this light-hearted theme for its annual fund-raising walk, Nov. 3 at Pearlridge Mall. This walk is unusual for its short course (one mile), for being held indoors and for having no registration fee. The organization is now lining up walkers who are asked to seek pledges from friends, family and coworkers. The one who raises the most money wins a Neighbor Island trip for two. For the fund-raising packet and registration form, call 596-2900.

Fashion success, feng shui-style

Those born at 9 a.m. on Oct. 12, 2002, should add black and dark blue to their wardrobes to enhance balance, energy and good fortune. Auspicious jewelry choices are blue sapphires and black coral. That fashion advice is according to Alan Lum, author of "Feng Shui for Lunch."

In a new workshop called "Dressing for Feng Shui Success," Lum will give each participant guidelines from the "Four Pillars teachings" of feng shui, based on each individual's birth date and time. The workshop will be held in the Kaua'i Room of the Blaisdell Center Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Cost: $50 and preregistration is required. Send check to Alan Lum Publishing, P.O. Box 19157, Honolulu, HI 96817 or call 735-5688
