Moped rider killed in hit-run

Police last night were searching for the hit-and-run driver of a car that struck and killed a moped rider on Farrington Highway in Wai'anae.

The accident occurred at about 8:10 p.m. near the Wai'anae fire station. The moped rider, identified only as a 19-year-old man, was flown by Army helicopter to The Queen's Medical Center, where he died.

Police traffic investigators were at the scene of the accident late last night and more details were not available. But a police all-points-bulletin described the car as a black Malibu with heavy damage to its front.

Weed & Seed rally in Kalihi

A rally to support bringing the Weed & Seed law-enforcement program into Kalihi Valley will be held at 4:30 p.m. today in the Farrington High School cafeteria.

City and state lawmakers are expected to attend the event, designed to build support for the community effort to extend the Kalihi-Palama/Chinatown Weed & Seed program farther into Kalihi.

Weed & Seed relies on community efforts and tough legal penalties to "weed out" crime, then applies crime prevention, intervention, treatment and neighborhood revitalization to "seed" a safer community.

"Our community has its share of problems, including crime, illegal drugs and poverty, but we are also rich in resources, especially in the area of nonprofit agencies, organizations and churches that offer a wealth of services," said Rep. Dennis Arakaki, D-28th (Kalihi Valley, Kamehameha Heights). "However, we need a focal point for coordination and collaboration that Weed & Seed can provide to pull together these different segments to work with the residents on projects such as community policing and drug abuse prevention."
