HPU rolls in PacWest volleyball

Susy Garbelotti had 15 kills, eight digs and eight blocks as the Hawai'i Pacific women's volleyball team remained unbeaten in the Pacific West Conference after sweeping Chaminade at Blaisdell Arena last night.

The Sea Warriors (9-3 overall, 4-0 PacWest) won, 30-26, 30-23, 30-26.

Audrey Brady had 12 kills for Chaminade (9-3 and 3-2).

HPU overcame a 25-23 deficit in the third game by scoring six straight points. Sandra Brunke sparked the surge with three kills and a block.

After Chaminade blocked Brunke on HPU's first match point, Vera Oliveira clinched the victory with a dump shot.

In other news, Brigham Young-Hawai'i dropped from No. 2 to No. 5 in the AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 following its upset loss to Hawai'i-Hilo last Friday.

The Seasiders (12-1, 3-1) received 717 points.

Hawai'i Pacific remained at No. 24 for the fifth consecutive week.

Cal State-San Bernardino (17-0) remained at the top spot in the poll with 875 points and 35 first-place votes.

GOLF

Kim ousted in third round: Wahiawa's Beverly Kim won her second-round match but was ousted in the third round yesterday at the 41st USGA Senior Women's Amateur in Southern Pines, N.C.

Kim defeated Chris Spivey, of Pell City, Ala., 1-up in the morning at the 5,873-yard, par-72 Mid-Pines Inn and Golf Club.

Taffy Brower, of Boynton Beach, Fla., eliminated Kim, 4 and 2, in the afternoon's third round.

Meanwhile, three-time defending champion Carol Semple Thompson extended her record for consecutive wins in one USGA event by advancing to today's quarterfinals.

Thompson, of Sewickley, Pa., has won 21 matches in a row.

Asao finishes strong: Kellen-Floyd Asao shot a 5-under 67 yesterday as the University of Hawai'i men's team finished tied for 11th at the Wolf Pack Classic in Genoa, Nev.

Asao (209) placed fourth, five strokes off the lead.

UH moved up two spots to finish at 17-over 881. Host Nevada (851) won the event.

Arakawa lifts UH to 12th: The University of Hawai'i women's team finished strong on the final day of the Heather Farr Memorial Tournament yesterday in Broomfield, Colo.

UH started the day in 16th and last place, but behind the play of senior Bobbie Arakawa's career-best final round of 74, and freshman Tara Chappell's 76, moved up four spots to 12th with 643.

Denver (603) won the event.

WATER POLO

BYUH falls: No. 11 UC-San Diego beat the Brigham Young-Hawai'i men's water polo team, 10-7, yesterday in San Diego.

All-American Vanja Kalabic and Keith Dow each scored two goals for the Seasiders (5-5).
