Police Beat
Hit-and-run victim was Wai'anae man
A 19-year-old man who died Tuesday night after a hit-and-run accident in Wai'anae has been identified as Tyrone C. Pila-Ramos of Wai'anae, the medical examiner's office said yesterday.
Pila-Ramos was in an 8:18 p.m. collision involving his moped and a car on Farrington Highway near Wai'anae Intermediate School. He was pronounced dead at The Queen's Medical Center at 9:35 p.m.
The driver of the car fled the scene of the accident, police said. A 16-year-old boy surrendered to police at the Kapolei station at 1:15 a.m. yesterday and was arrested on suspicion of first-degree negligent homicide and failure to render aid, police said. He has been released pending further investigation.
Vehicular homicide investigators said the car was traveling east on Farrington Highway in the far right lane and collided with the moped during a lane change.
Pila-Ramos' death was O'ahu's 49th traffic fatality of the year, compared with 60 fatalities in the same period in 2001.
