BOE candidates to be at forum
Sixteen candidates for the Board of Education have been invited to a candidate forum from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.Oct. 24.
The forum will be held on the University of Hawai'i-Manoa campus at the School of Architecture Auditorium. The event is open to the public and free parking will be available in Lot 2.
Candidates from the Maui, Central and Windward districts have been invited to participate, along with at-large candidates and those running in the special election.
The forum is being arranged by David McClain, dean of the college of business administration, and sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce of Hawai'i, the UH college of education, the Hawai'i Business Roundtable, the Hawai'i Parent Teacher Student Association and the Hawai'i State Teachers Association.
Book sale at Waipahu library
The Friends of Waipahu Public Library will hold a book sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 19.
Used books, cassettes, CDs and videos will be sold, with proceeds benefiting the library.
Donations may be dropped off during library hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday; 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 1 to 5 p.m. Friday.
Waipahu Public Library is at 94-275 Mokuola St., next to the Waipahu Civic Center.

Halloween reading at Liliha library
Liliha Public Library will present a special Halloween children's storytime Saturday.
Bill Van Osdol, known as Billy V. of KCCN-FM, will be the celebrity guest reader at this free program from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the library. Children ages 5 through 8 are invited, but must be accompanied by an adult.
The program will include arts and crafts activities.

Author will read Pele book to keiki
Michael Nordenstrom, author of "Pele and the Rivers of Fire," a new children's book, will be at a meet-the-author program at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Hawai'i State Library.
Nordenstrom will read aloud from his book in the Edna Allyn Room for Children. "Pele and the Rivers of Fire" is the story of Pele's journey from Tahiti to Hawai'i. It is recommended for children from kindergarten and up.
Nordenstrom, a new author and an associate librarian at Salt Lake City Public Library, also will lead an art craft for children.
The Friends of the Library of Hawai'i will have Nordenstrom's book for sale after the program, and he will be available for book signings.
The free program is presented by Bess Press and the Hawai'i State Library.
