Kane'ohe sailors third in nationals

Kane'ohe Yacht Club, with University of Hawai'i All-American Molly O'Bryan skippering, finished third at the 2002 Adams Cup women's keelboat nationals, which ended yesterday in San Francisco.

Vicki Sodaro, of the host San Francisco Yacht Club, finished first with 15.3 points. San Francisco won half its 10 races. Kane'ohe won two races and accumulated 33 points — three points out of second.

O'Bryan's crew consisted of Bank of Hawaii Vice President Marcy Fleming, Honolulu police officer Genie Simeona and 2002 Cal graduate Annelise Moore.

MORE SAILING

• UH sailor earns national berth: University of Hawai'i's Bryan Lake won the Men's Singlehanded PCCs, hosted by the University of California this past weekend.

Lake, who finished first in four races, scored 90 points to beat runner-up Brian Haines of Stanford by 16 and earn a berth in the national championships.

Other UH sailors were Steven Brown (eighth) and Will Edwards (ninth).

Blair Ladd was UH's top women's sailor with a 10th-place finish. Renee DeCurtis (11th), Samantha Howard (14th) and Jessica Rohr (16th) also competed.

GOLF

• Sasada 7 back: Makena's Brian Sasada shot a 1-under-par 71 at the Western PGA club Professional Championship yesterday at Thanksgiving Point Golf Club in Lehi, Utah.

Sasada is seven behind leader Steve Schneiter, who set the competitive course record with an 8-under 64.

Lana'i's Brendan Moynahan and Maui's Kirk Nelson shot 74, Honolulu's Kevin Ralbovsky and Hapuna's Ron Castillo Jr. 76 and Kohala's Matt Hall 77.

The top 30 in this tournament advance to the 2003 PGA Club Professional Championship.

WATER POLO

• BYUH beaten: Seventh-ranked Loyola Marymount beat 18th-ranked Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 10-8, in a men's water polo match yesterday in Los Angeles.

Vanja Kalabic scored four goals for BYUH (5-6).
