Trance master spins at Maze

In an effort to bring the world's best DJs to our shores every month, Maze nightclub presents Kimball Collins, a renowned trance and progressive DJ who has gone from an Orlando, Fla., favorite to a world-class artist with his mesmerizing musical style.

Take a musical journey 9 p.m.-4 a.m. tonight and early tomorrow with Collins, as well as nearly a dozen local DJs who will be playing throughout four rooms. Here's the lineup: Scottie Soul, B. McCarthy, Paul Shih and Eli at the Paradox Lounge; Billy G. and Good Vibe in the Red Room; PSI, Ryan Galinato and G-Spot at the Maze Arena; and Rise Up and Kavet the Catalys at the Milk Bar. Journey rocks on tonight

Journey, the rock band that created anthems of life and love through searing vocals and sweeping guitar solos, continues with a second show 7:30 tonight at the Blaisdell Arena. The band returns to the Islands 12 years after making Hawai'i history by selling out five shows.

Art and music blend downtown

Seattle indie-rock label Sub Pop Records, internationally recognized for giving birth to grunge in the late '80s and signing bands such as Nirvana, Sound Garden and Afghan Whigs, is also highly regarded for their cutting-edge pop-art designs — album art, posters and exclusive Sub Pop invitations and Christmas cards — all of which will be part of an art exhibit Saturday through Oct. 26 at Ground Level, 1154 Fort Street Mall.

The opening night art reception, 9 p.m.-2 a.m. Saturday, includes performances by Extra Stout, Niki Dellios with Walks Among Us, and Little Moments featuring members of Ooklah the Moc, as well as DJs Maggie the Cat and Independent, and B movies all night. To honor a princess

The Sheraton Princess Kaiulani will honor its namesake, Princess Victoria Ka'iulani, at Hana Ho'ohiwahiwa 'O Ka'iulani, a weeklong celebration that will include free hula lessons, lei making, lauhala weaving, taro demonstrations and 'ukulele lessons Sunday through Oct. 19 at the hotel.

Capping off the festivities will be the Princess Ka'iulani Keiki Hula Festival, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Ainahau Showroom. The free event will showcase performances by keiki ages 5-12 from various halau. For details, visit www.sheraton.com/hawaii or call 922-5811.

Glitter dome

Music, massages and make-overs abound at the Glitter N Glamour Experience — a monthly party geared toward those who thrive on self-expression through fashion, hair, makeup, music and art — 9 p.m.-4 a.m. Tuesday at Wave Waikiki.

Los Angeles DJs PAULe (progressive house) and COOLwHIP (hip hop) will provide the sounds while Chop and Paul Brown salons supply free make-overs and massages all night long. Adding to the mix will be David Evans with his art expo and SwingKidd's fire show. Admission is $12 before midnight; for 21 and older. Dressing creatively is a must. 941-0424.

The sounds of taiko

Traditional folk songs and dance from Japan and contemporary taiko drumming from America combine in Himawari, an all-women production featuring three members of San Jose Taiko and three members of Hanayui from Japan, 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at Leeward Community College Theatre.

The performance is a unique collaboration in which cultural boundaries and aesthetic sensibilities are shared and tested. A question-and-answer session with the artists follows each show.

Out of the past

Here's an event for "Antiques Roadshow" types: The Wiki Wiki One Day Vintage Collectibles & Hawaiiana Show, noon-5 p.m. Saturday at the Blaisdell Center Hawai'i Suites, will feature O'ahu, Neighbor Island and Mainland dealers selling everything (pre-1980s) from china to dolls, and furniture to jewelry. Treasure seekers also can peruse aisles of aloha shirts, bottles, coins, kimono, toys, postcards, ivories and more. Early entry (10 a.m.-noon) is $15.
