THE LEFT LANE
A day of difference

Advertiser staff and news services

It's 15 days and counting to Make a Difference Day — Oct. 26, a Saturday.

As of yesterday, 34 Hawai'i projects were registered on the Web site for the annual community service effort (www.makeadifferenceday.com). There are neighborhood cleanup projects, fund-raisers for non-profit organizations, school refurbishing and myriad other good causes awaiting volunteers who want to make the world a little better, at least for the day.

If you want to help with an existing project, log on to the Web site or check our the Sunday Island Life section Oct. 20 for statewide projects seeking volunteers. If you have a project you wish to register, log on and fill out the online registration form. Those registered by tomorrow also will be listed in the Oct. 20 section. Projects reported to Make A Difference Day can earn awards for charities.

Digital music-making

The piano recital used to be an annual event (or form of torture, depending on your point of view) for music students — a stiff and formal test of ability held in a school auditorium or other such venue. Tomorrow's free ABC Music Clavinova Festival, sponsored by the makers of the Yamaha Clavinova digital piano at the Kahala Mall, is envisioned as an upbeat alternative to the old-style event.

More than 200 students of 11 different teachers, from age 4 to community-college age, who have been practicing on loaned digital pianos, will perform in configurations from solo to group, aided by the innovative sound effects of these electronic instruments. The event is from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. tomorrow on the mall's Center Stage. ABC Music will then offer the used instruments for sale at a discount.

Fund-raising fun

Manutahi, a group that promotes character education and academic excellence for youth through Tahitian cultural values, is engaging in two fund-raising efforts this month: a Koala Moa chicken sale, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow at Wahiawa District Park on California Avenue ($7.50 per chicken) and working the concession stand Sunday at the University of Hawai'i women's volleyball game at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The organization has been in the news lately in connection with a charge that about $3,000 in fund-raising proceeds were taken from it by subpoenaed grand jury witness Lisa-Katharine Otsuka. (Otsuka has pleaded innocent.) The nonprofit group serves nearly 100 youths and their parents from Wai'anae to La'ie, and proceeds from fund-raising efforts will be used to allow those served to attend cultural programs on the Neighbor Islands and Tahiti.
