Artsy weekend downtown

The downtown area is hosting its own activities. Highlights:

• Today's Culture and Arts District Celebration is your chance to reclaim what used to be the center of life in old-time Honolulu.

Learn about historic Honolulu on a walking tour, 10 a.m.-noon. Meet at the American Institute of Architects office at 1128 Nu'uanu Ave.; $15, 545-4242 (reservations).

There's hands-on mask-making, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at The ARTS at Marks Garage; donation requested; 521-2903.

Asia/Pacific artists will perform 2-9 p.m. at Pauahi Street and Fort Street Mall. Free, 543-3558.

One North King Studio 1 hosts hula by Halau Na Mamo O Ka'ala, jazz by Willow Chang and Jeff Peterson, interactive theater with Monkey and the Waterfall, fashion shows and the surf sounds of Da Hobras. 9 p.m.-2 a.m. $10, 550-8701.

• The romantic sounds of pianist Jim Brickman and vocalist Ann Cochran will fill the Hawai'i Theatre at 7:30 p.m. today and 4 p.m. tomorrow. Tickets: $30, $35. 528-0506.

• Think Nirvana, Soundgarden, Mudhoney. The Seattle record label Sub Pop Records that brought grunge to the forefront of '80s rock also was known for its pop art graphic designs. Those will be celebrated at an opening reception, 9 p.m.-2 a.m. today at ground level, 1154 Fort Street Mall.

There's music, with punk rockers Extra Stout, indie rockers Niki Dellios with Walks Among Us and Little Moments, featuring members of Ooklah the Moc. Not to mention B-movies, and DJs Maggie the Cat and Independent. It's for those 21 and older; $6. 546-9998.
