Big Isle's Dorian eliminated in Spain

Shane Dorian of the Big Island was eliminated in the second round of the Billabong Pro Mundaka yesterday in 4- to 6-foot waves at Mundaka, Spain.

Dorian was defeated by Brazil's Neco Padaratz, 11.25-7.0.

Hawai'i surfers Andy Irons and Kalani Robb advanced to the third round on Thursday.

Irons, who is ranked No. 1 on surfing's world tour, is scheduled to face Spanish wildcard entry Iker Fuentes. Robb, who is ranked No. 9, will take on Australian Nathan Webster.

VOLLEYBALL

Stanley, Madison win: Hawai'i's Jon Stanley and Tom Madison played on the Quiksilver Legends team that won a gold medal at the 2002 World Masters Games.

The Games end today in Melbourne, Australia. More than 30,000 athletes are competing.

Stanley and Madison played in the 55-year age division. Their team included players from California and Colorado. It was the only American team to win volleyball gold.

Stanley was named MVP on the All-World team for his age group. Madison earned Outstanding Setter honors.

Quiksilver defeated Russia, 23-25, 25-23, 25-12, in the semifinals. In a best three-of-five final, it swept Finland, 25-16, 25-20, 25-23.

WATER POLO

BYUH wins two: The Brigham Young-Hawai'i men's water polo team picked up two wins yesterday on the second day of the Claremont Convergence Tournament in Claremont, Calif.

The Seasiders (9-6) beat Redlands, 7-5, and Iona, 9-8.

WEIGHTLIFTING

Masters win gold: Wayne Oyafuso of MauiÊand Michael Harada of Honolulu won their age divisions at the World Masters Weightlifting Championships in Melbourne, Australia last week.

Oyafuso won the 123-pound weight class in the 75-79 age group.Ê

Harada brought home the gold in the 187-pound weight class in the 45-49 age group.Ê

GOLF

Scores soar: After two peaceful days, cold weather and high winds hit the Western PGA Club Professional championship yesterday at Lehi, Utah.

Kevin Burton, of Idaho, pulled into the lead at 70-208.

Hawai'i golfers at the tournament are Makena's Brian Sasada (76-222), Lana'i's Brendan Moynahan (79-224) and Waialae's Kevin Ralbovsky (84-231).
