No. 3 Kailua tops McKinley, 42-22

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

The Kailua High School football team's thunder-and-lightning offense proved too much for McKinley last night, as the Surfriders rambled to a 42-22 victory at Roosevelt Stadium.

Kailua struck through the air — 183 yards passing by quarterback Ranson Kepa — and the ground, led by Nathan Leaver's 206 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries.

The Surfriders, the only unbeaten team in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association, improved to 7-0 overall and 6-0 in the OIA Red Conference-East. They are ranked No. 3 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll. McKinley (5-3, 4-3) is ranked No. 9.

The teams exhibited great offensive firepower in the first half, after which Kailua led 21-16. But the Surfriders went 80 yards in six plays to open the second half, scoring on Leaver's 15-yard run. Mike Sakaba's extra point made it 28-16.

Later in the third quarter, Kailua went 90 yards in eight plays culminating in Leaver's 5-yard run with 2:10 remaining. Sakaba's PAT made it 35-16.

The Surfriders recovered the ensuing kickoff on the Tigers' 47 after it ricocheted off a McKinley player. Kailua then scored in the first minute of the fourth quarter on Keali'i Kalahiki's 4-yard run that helped widen the lead to 42-16.

The Tigers closed to 42-22 after Abel Werner's 71-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Iaea with 7:56 left, but could not find the end zone again.

Werner completed 20 of 30 passes without an interception for 277 yards.

McKinley jumped to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter after Quinton Sayers returned an interception 39 yards for a touchdown. The Surfriders tied it at 7 after Leaver's 1-yard touchdown run.

Kailua took a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter after Kepa's 1-yard quarterback sneak. The Tigers closed to 14-13 on Werner's 30-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Bumanglag. The extra point attempt failed.

McKinley went up 16-14 on John Mai's 18-yard field goal, but the Surfriders took the lead back after Kepa's 42-yard touchdown pass to Brad Ching with 45 seconds left.
