UH's Chang captures Triton meet

University of Hawai'i's Victoria Chang won the Triton Classic cross country meet at the UC San Diego's North Campus Course yesterday.

Chang finished the 6-kilometer course in 21 minutes, 46.7 seconds.

Hawai'i finished third among Division I schools with 101 points (top five places). UCLA was first with 57 points, followed by UC Irvine (78). Nevada, of the Western Athletic Conference, was fourth (102).

UH's Hanna Bremler finished second in the Division I race in a career-best 22:10.8.

A total of 271 runners from 29 teams in five divisions participated in 68-degree weather with overcast skies and no wind.

MORE CROSS COUNTRY

• HPU sweep: Christian Madsen and Sayuri Kusutani won the men's and women's races to lead Hawai'i Pacific to victory in the HPU Cross Country Invitational yesterday at Hawai'i Loa.

Madsen finished the men's 10-kilometer race in 31 minutes, 33 seconds. Shane Dougherty of Irvine Valley College was second in 32:53, followed by Abdeslam Naji of HPU in 33:52. HPU had a team-low 23 points, followed by Irvine (68).

Kusutani won her third individual title of the season in 21:33 for the 6-kilometer course. Chelsea Smith of BYUH was second in 22:40 and Janine Brown of HPU third in 22:56. HPU scored 21 points, followed by BYUH (47).

Thirty-three men and 35 women completed the races.


VOLLEYBALL

• BYUH, Chaminade win: Chun Yi Lin had 13 kills to lead Brigham Young-Hawai'i to a 30-25, 30-27, 30-22 victory over Hawai'i Pacific in a women's volleyball match at St. Andrew's Priory last night.

No. 5 BYUH improved to 14-1 with the non-conference victory. No. 24 HPU is 9-5.

Susy Garbelotti had 13 kills for the Sea Warriors.

At Hilo, Hawai'i, Kahala Kabalis had 22 kills and Valasi Sepulona 18 to lead Chaminade to a 25-30, 30-24, 30-23, 30-27 non-conference victory over the University of Hawai'i-Hilo.

Chaminade is 11-3, Hilo 6-12.

Sara Pilgreen had 14 kills for Hilo.


TENNIS

• Dillingham upset: Anthony Ilagan defeated No. 8 Matija Sulin, 6-4, 6-3, in the only upset of a seeded player during the opening round of the 50th Dillingham Grand Prix Tennis Championships at Punahou School yesterday.

The singles quarterfinals will be played today starting at 8 a.m. and the semifinals starting at 11 a.m. Doubles quarterfinals begin at 1 p.m. The finals are tomorrow.

The top seven men's seeds advancing were Erik Sandblom, Mikael Maata, Jesse Walter, Blaz Jurjec, Matey Pampulov, Jan Axel Tribler and Andrew Makarevich.

The eight seeded women advancing were Petra Gaspar, Tagifano Soonalole-Taosoga, Lauren Fitzgerald, Stacy Hakikawa, Polina Kravets, Dora Holdarova, Justine Boutet and Chole Bihag.


GOLF

• Trio fails to advance: Hawai'i's Brian Sasada, Brendan Moynahan and Kevin Ralbovsky finished out of the top 30 yesterday at the 2002 Western PGA Club Professional Championship and failed to advance to the 2003 Club Professional Championship.

Idaho's Kevin Burton won the $150,000 tournament at Thanksgiving Point Golf Club in Lehi, Utah. He closed with an even-par 72 for a four-day total of 8-under 280.

The top 30 cutoff came at 296. Sasada, who won $605, shot 82-304. Moynahan won $580 with 81-305 and Ralbovsky collected $470 at 81-312.
