TOORU JOE KANAZAWA, a pioneering journalist and novelist who was one of the oldest members of World War II's legendary Japanese American fighting unit, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, died Oct. 2 at his home in Topanga, Calif. He was 95 and had emphysema. See story.

LUIS ALCANTRA BUTAY SR., 78, of Honolulu, died Sept. 26, 2002. Born in Batac, Ilocos Norte, Philippines. Survived by wife, Crispina; son, Luis Jr.; daughter, Lydia; brothers, Melicio and Antonio; sisters, Esperanza Ventura, Celestina Delos Santos and Tomasa Cristobal; three grandchildren. NELLIE K. CABANBAN, 73, of Kaunakakai, Moloka'i, died Oct. 1, 2002. Born in Honolulu. Survived by children, Ricky, Danny, Piilani Shichida, Sheila Calaona, Hymie Castro Jr., and Freddie and Fiette Farias; nine grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; sister, Rachael Kalima; brothers, John Kalau Sr. and Samuel Kopoi.
