Rainbows stop Rice in soccer

Sophomore Natalie Groenewoud scored with 34 seconds remaining in the first half to lead the University of Hawai'i women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Rice last night at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Groenewoud scored her second goal of the season when she flicked a cross from Joelle Sugai into the goal. Sasha Araya-Schraner also was credited with an assist.

The Rainbow Wahine are 5-5-2 overall, 2-0 in the Western Athletic Conference. Rice is 1-8-2 and 1-2.

• Fresno State's Erin Sayegusa, a former Kaiser High standout, scored in a 2-0 upset over previously undefeated UTEP (12-1, 3-1). Fresno State is 3-11, 2-2.
