Top seeds advance to Dillingham tennis finals

It'll be No. 1 vs. No. 2 in the men's and women's singles finals of the 50th Dillingham Grand Prix Tennis Championships today at Punahou School courts.

Men's top seed Erik Sandblom will face No. 2 Mikael Maata. Women's top seed Petra Gaspar, who hasn't lost a game in the tournament, meets second seed Tagifano Soonalole-Taosoga.

The singles finals start at 1 p.m., followed by the men's and women's doubles finals at 3 p.m. The doubles semifinals will be played at 10 a.m.

Sandblom defeated third-seeded Jesse Walter, 6-4, 6-2, in the semifinals yesterday, while Maata defeated No. 4 Blaz Jurjec, 2-6, 2-0 (retired).

Gaspar defeated fourth-seeded Stacy Hakikawa, 6-0, 6-0, while Soonalole-Taosoga defeated No. 3 Lauren Fitzgerald, 6-3, 6-2.

Gaspar and Soonalole-Taosoga are also in the doubles semifinal and will play Dora Holdarova and Loni Matsunaga. Polina Kravets and Silvia Ricote face Kalei Gora and Krystina Katayama in the other semifinal.

Sandblom and Walter also are in the men's doubles semifinals and will play Matey Pampulov and Sasa Pirc. In the other semifinal, David Lam and Christopher Ma face Maata and Jan Tribler.


MEETINGS

• Jones at Na Koa meeting: University of Hawai'i head football coach June Jones and assistant coach Tyson Helton will discuss the Warriors' 59-34 victory over Nevada at today's Na Koa Football Club luncheon.

The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. at All Star Hawai'i in Waikiki. For reservations, call 955-8326.


SURFING

• Irons, Robb advance: Andy Irons of Kaua'i and Kalani Robb of O'ahu's North Shore advanced to the fourth round of the Billabong Pro Mundaka yesterday.

The third round was completed in 3- to 4-foot waves at Mundaka, Spain.

Irons, who is currently ranked No. 1 on surfing's World Championship Tour, defeated Spanish wildcard entry Iker Fuentes, 15.6-9.6. Irons opened the heat with a near-perfect 9.5 ride (out of 10) and never relinquished the lead.

Robb, who is ranked No. 9, caught just three waves in his heat, but still managed to defeat Australia's Nathan Webster, 13.75-11.75.

Australian Luke Egan, who is ranked No. 2, also advanced yesterday along with six-time former world champion Kelly Slater of Florida.
