THE LEFT LANE
Love aplenty

Advertiser staff and news services

Warning: "Strong Currents" may pose a serious threat to your ideas about romance writers.

The anthology, short fiction and poetry from 21 members of the Romance Writers of America's Aloha Chapter, isn't bound by any central theme but there is plenty of love to go around — for words, for imagination and, particularly, for Hawai'i.

Among the contributors are best-selling romance author and part-time Kaua'i resident Jill Marie Landis; Laureen Kwock, who publishes novels under the pen name Clarice Peters; and novelist Elizabeth Engstrom, director of the Maui Writers Retreat.

A reading and signing will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Encore Espresso in the 'Aina Haina Shopping Center.

Cool tattoo

How long did it take to apply the tattoo that Ralph Fiennes' character, Francis Dolarhyde, has on his back in the hit movie "Red Dragon"? According to Fiennes, application of Dolarhyde's tattoo took seven to eight hours a session. Luckily, he only had four days of shooting with the tattoo, which required "two or three" sessions in all. Fiennes was able to sleep with the design, which was applied by Ken Diaz.

Did logging all that time getting the tattoo applied dissuade Fiennes from getting a permanent one? "I like the tattoo. I think it's pretty cool. But I'm not sure I'm in a hurry to get one," Fiennes said. By the way, Tom Berg, who designed the tattoo used in the movie, is a California-based tattoo artist; check www.socaltattoo.com.
