Five OIA teams vie for final spots in league playoffs

By Stacy Kaneshiro

 •  OIA playoff dates

First round—Oct. 24-25
Quarterfinals—Oct. 31, Nov. 1
Semifinals—Nov. 8-9
Championship—Nov. 15

It's the final week of regular season play in O'ahu Interscholastic Association football. That only means one thing: Who'll make the 12-team playoffs?

The West is settled as far as who will advance. The East boils down to two teams vying for the final berth. The White has three teams with a chance for one of the two berths.

Here are the scenarios.

Tiebreakers

  1. Head-to-head
  2. Eliminate ties
  3. Record vs. common opponents
  4. Point values of teams it beat
  5. Coin toss

OIA West

Note: Final games will determine seeding.

OIA East

Note: In possible four-way tie with Castle, McKinley, Farrington and Roosevelt ending up 3-4, Castle and McKinley are in because each is 2-1 in head-to-head among the four tied teams. Then Farrington gets final berth by head-to-head tiebreaker with Roosevelt.

If Castle, Farrington and Roosevelt tie at 3-4, since each beat one but not the other, the next tiebreaker is record against common opponents. Castle and Roosevelt would be 3-3 and Farrington 2-4. Roosevelt would be the fourth seed and Castle the fifth. Farrington is out.

Farrington gets final berth if Roosevelt loses.

OIA White

Note: If Nanakuli wins, it's over for Pearl City and Kapolei because Kaimuki beat Pearl City and Kapolei to win that tiebreaker.

If Nanakuli, Pearl City and Kapolei tie at 5-2, each beat one but not the other, and since all had common opponents and have the same number of championship points from teams they beat, a coin toss eliminates two teams. This is Pearl City's only hope of getting a berth.

Kapolei needs to win and needs Nanakuli and Pearl City to lose. That would tie the Hurricanes with the Golden Hawks. Kapolei wins the head-to-head tiebreaker.

If Kaimuki and Nanakuli play to a tie, both clinch and the other two teams are out.
