A Royal Garden Party

A fund-raiser for The Friends of 'Iolani Palace

'Iolani Palace Grounds

Tickets: $200 per person

Taking their fashion cues from Europe, Hawai'i's elite women wore corsets, crinolines and extravagantly embellished hats at the end of the Victorian era and the dawn of the Edwardian period. Men often wore white from head to toe.

Corseted waists, high necks, waistcoats under long coats and multilayered skirts were tolerated in spite of the tropical heat.

A Royal Garden Party, in the tradition of Queen Kapi'olani's charity events, will attempt to re-create this gracious era as a fund-raiser for the Friends of 'Iolani Palace. Attendees are asked to dress in either aloha attire or the manner of the late 19th century.

Regina Kawananakoa, a board member of the Friends of 'Iolani Palace, and several of her friends, plan to dress to the nines and arrive in carriages.

The garden party will feature canopied supper service, lantern-lit dancing, period entertainment and genteel sporting activities such as lawn bowling, croquet and badminton. The Royal Hawaiian Band and Hawaiian trios, who will stroll the palace grounds, will be the main sources of music. Kamehameha Schools students will demonstrate waltzes.

A silent auction will offer unusual period items such as a lithograph of Queen Kamamalu when she was 22, Ni'ihau shell lei and a gold and onyx bracelet with "aloha" scrolled across it.
