Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono's record of interest in health care and civil rights helped give her the association's support.

The 1,000-member Hawai'i chapter of the National Association of Social Workers has endorsed Democrat Mazie Hirono for governor, officials said yesterday.

"Mazie will listen to the people and take action to improve the quality of their lives," said Hawai'i chapter spokesman Victor Voth in a news release.

The association said the endorsement was part of a campaign to elect legislators who acknowledge the importance of access to affordable health care, the availability of social services and family supports, and protecting civil rights.

The chapter bills itself as the largest association of professional social workers in the state.
