A man was killed last night when he lost control of his motorcycle and it crashed on Moanalua Freeway.

The accident occurred at about 8:50 p.m. in the west-bound lanes near the Red Hill off-ramp. Police described the rider as a man in his 20s.

Police closed all west-bound lanes while they conducted their investigation. Traffic was diverted to Middle Street and H-1 Freeway.

Mom denied bail in abandonment case

A 24-year-old mother accused of leaving her three young children alone at Honolulu airport on Sunday will be held without bail until a Nov. 21 hearing to determine if she is mentally fit to stand trial.

Family Court Judge Darryl Choy decided Monday to hold Nikki Cliff-Vasquez without bail at the O'ahu Community Correctional Center until she undergoes a mental evaluation, said Carolyn Brown of the state public defender's office.

Cliff-Vasquez's children — an 8-year-old girl and two boys, ages 4 and 6 — have been placed in foster care by Child Protective Services.

Wahiawa man held in Oct. 9 shooting

A 27-year-old Wahiawa man was arrested yesterday in connection with the shooting of another man Oct. 9 in Waialua.

The man was booked for attempted murder and a firearms violation and was being held in a police cellblock pending charges. He was arrested by officers with the Wahiawa Crime Reduction Unit.

He is accused of shooting a 26-year-old man in the face near Kukea Circle. The victim was brought to the Waialua Fire Station by another man shortly after the shooting.

Police said the victim, who is recovering, has not been cooperative.

Fugitive sought on North Shore

Police and the state public safety officials are seeking a fugitive with previous convictions for sexual assault and burglary.

The parole of James Gaudet, 43, has been revoked because he failed to report to his parole officer in August and moved from his parole address in Wahiawa, police said. As a convicted sex offender, Gaudet is required to notify and register his residence with law enforcement.

Police said he was last seen in Wahiawa on Oct. 1 by family members. He has told them he does not want to return to prison. Gaudet is believed to be around Wahiawa, Waialua and Hale'iwa.

Gaudet is 5 feet 10, 205 pounds, with black hair, brown eyes and a mustache. He has a tattoo on his left hand and may be operating a 1985 AMC brown Jeep with the license number ERZ120.

Police on Monday charged a 33-year-old Kapolei man with first-degree sexual assault on a young child.

Joseph Krout is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail for the alleged attack, which occurred between Aug. 1 and Sept. 15, police said.

Police deny link to national charity

The Honolulu Police Department said it is not affiliated with an effort by the National Association of Chiefs of Police to solicit donations from the public.

HPD said the National Association of Chiefs of Police, a legitimate organization, is reportedly calling O'ahu residents and asking for donations to provide bullet-resistant vests for police officers in their community.

Honolulu police officials say the department does not receive monetary support or vests from this group.
