Weed & Seed on Kalihi agenda

Support for expanding the Chinatown Weed & Seed crime-fighting program farther into Kalihi will be discussed at the Kalihi-Palama Neighborhood Board meeting at 7 tonight in the Kapalama Elementary School cafeteria.

The board also will discuss installing no-parking signs on North King Street between Kalihi and Houghtailing streets and will try to fill three vacancies.


BIG ISLAND

Mink memorial in Hilo tonight

HILO, Hawai'i — A Big Island memorial for the late Congresswoman Patsy T. Mink will be held tonight at Hilo's Sanga Hall.

The gathering at the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin Buddhist facility, 428 Kilauea Ave., will start at 7 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Patsy Takemoto Mink Education Foundation that benefits low-income women and children.


Water use cut in Hamakua

HILO, Hawai'i — Most of the Hamakua district was placed on water restrictions yesterday because of a pump failure at the Haina Well near Honoka'a.

Civil Defense Administrator Bill Davis said the Department of Water Supply ordered customers in the area to cut back use by 25 percent until the pump is replaced in about three weeks.

The areas are Honoka'a, Ahualoa, Kalopa, Pohakea and upper Pa'auilo.

"With your full cooperation, residents can be supplied with water during this emergency," Davis said.


Big Isle phones silent for hours

HILO, Hawai'i — The Big Island was without phone service for several hours yesterday after an accident involving a truck severed a fiberoptic cable seven miles west of Waimea.

Dwayne Miyashiro, Big Island manager for Verizon, said service was expected to be restored by the early evening.

Some state agencies sent workers home after phones and computer links went down around 1:30 p.m. Interisland phone service also was affected.


WINDWARD O'AHU

Windward group will share tents

The Windward Ahupua'a Alliance will share two 20-foot by 40-foot tents with other non-profit community groups on a first-come, first-served basis.

The organization, which was formed to ensure public access to natural, cultural and historical sites, received the tents as donations from URS Corp. and Frank Coluccio Construction Co. for the Windward Ho'olaulea last month.

The tents are free, but a nominal deposit fee will be returned if the tents are returned in the same condition, said Shannon Wood, alliance interim president. For more information, call Wood at 263-6001.


O'AHU'S NORTH SHORE

Swimmers saved at Turtle Bay cove

Three Turtle Bay Resort security officers and a contract worker helped rescue two men and a woman who were being swept by strong currents yesterday from the swimming cove area.

City Ocean Safety Lt. Pat Kelly credited the men with bringing in the swimmers, who were not seriously injured. The incident occurred at about 10:30 a.m.


ELECTION 2002

U.S. House race debate tonight

Republican Bob McDermott and Libertarian Jeff Mallan, who are on the Nov. 5 general election ballot with the late U. S. Rep. Patsy Mink for the 2nd Congressional District, will participate in a live TV debate tonight as part of the "Vote! 2002: Candidates Debate Series."

The debate is sponsored by 'Olelo Community Television and will air from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Oceanic Channel 54 and Oceanic Digital Control.
