Alleged purse thief caughtAla Moana Center security officers yesterday chased down and caught a 20-year-old man who allegedly stole a woman's purse.
Police arrested the man, who has no local address, at Kona and Pi'ikoi streets on suspicion of second-degree theft. The woman's purse and its contents were recovered, police said.
The alleged purse-snatching in front of Longs Drug Store was reported at 5:22 p.m. Security officers caught the man and held him for police after a six-minute chase.
Accident cuts Kahana power
A car accident near Kahana early today knocked out power to 1,400 Hawaiian Electric Co. customers between Ka'a'awa and Hau'ula from 4:50 to 5:15 a.m. Power was restored to the last 100 customers by 6:30 a.m., said HECO spokesman Fred Kobashikawa.
