FASHION TRENDS
Caftan works well for beach or dining out

By Paula Rath

Some University of Hawai'i-Manoa fashion students traveled to London and Paris to learn more about the fashion industry in two of its capitals, and shopping was a big part of the experience. Here's what one student found, and how she's adapting it to her island style.

Marie Owens, pictured right, of Palolo, a junior majoring in design and merchandising, has an eclectic, hip personal style. She's not afraid to be different or to follow her own individual fashion sense. Her European find: a vintage cotton gauze floral print caftan.

Q. Where did you find it?

A. In a little shop in Camden Market in London.

Q. Why did you choose it?

A. I knew before I left Hawai'i that I wanted a caftan. This was one of a kind, so it was perfect for me.

Q. Where did you first see the trend?

A. I saw one in a magazine called Spruce and I thought I might make one for myself, but I never did.

Q. What are you wearing it with now that you're home?

A. It's really versatile. I can throw it over my bikini for the beach or wear it alone, or over jeans with high heels.

Q. Where do you wear it?

A. At home, out to dinner, to the beach.

Q. What's a no-no?

A. A clunky, heavy shoe would not work with a caftan.
