THE LEFT LANE
Through pain and joy, things we need to say

Advertiser Staff and News Services

When California businessman Mark Button lost his first wife suddenly to a brain aneurysm, he was left with a haunting sense of how important it is to say what you need to say to the people you love. Later, after he remarried, his second wife, Diane, was inspired after the birth of their first child to write a letter to her daughter, to be opened "on the birth of your first child."

This cluster of ideas has given birth to "The Letter Box," (Beyond Words, hardback, $16.95). The Buttons will sign books at noon Sunday at Borders, Ward Centre, and at 2 p.m. Sunday at Borders, Waikele.

Colors, sharp cuts make good hair days

The fall hair "story" is about bold colors used to enhance innovative haircuts and the use of multiple products to emphasize and define those cuts, according to Sonya and Christopher Dove, creative directors for Wella hair products. Here are three:

  • Prismatic Diva: long, piecey layers of hair with a short-to-medium undercut, infused with rich contrasting colors such as deep black and cool blonde
  • Modern Eve: a short, blunt cut with soft, rounded internal layers that frame the face
  • City Bird of Paradise: Long hair with loose internal structure and feathered ends; inner and outer layers differ in color, with shocking hues of bright orange and black.

Don't make college heavier than it is

The "Freshman 15," those extra pounds many students gain during their first year in college, can be avoided. These tips are based on Weight Watchers wisdom. Establish regular meal times. Don't store snack foods in the dorm room, or stick to fruit and veggies. Follow a night of partying with a day of lighter meals. Avoid eating in response to stress, depression, boredom or loneliness. Don't focus your social activities solely on food.
