Triathlon puts activity on hold

KAILUA, Kona, Hawai'i — Much of West Hawai'i from Kailua, Kona to Hawi in North Kohala will be tied up by the 24th Ironman Triathlon World Championship this weekend.

Several local and state roadways, as well as business and government operations, will be closed this week as an estimated 1,500 triathletes compete in the 140-mile race.

The weekend is virtually devoid of cultural or art activities from Waimea west as a result.

The greatest impact Saturday will be on Palani Road, Ali'i Drive and Kuakini Highway near Kailua Village. Much of those roads near the village will be closed from 7:30 a.m. to midnight Saturday.

Also affected is Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway during the 112-mile bicycle portion of the international contest and subsequent marathon run. All movements on and off the main West Hawai'i highway will be controlled by police on special duty.

Tomorrow, the Hawai'i Country Police Department will cancel road tests for all driving licenses applicants in Kona because of hundreds of athletes running and cycling along the roadways. Tests are to resume at 8 a.m. Monday, said spokeswoman Naomi O'Dell.

The Hawai'i Community Federal Credit Union in Kailua will be closed Saturday but can be accessed by e-mail via www.hicommfcu.com.

Details about Saturday's multiple and separately scheduled closures are available by calling a road closure hotline, (808) 327-6000.

Most officials advise drivers to use the upper or Mamalahoa Highway that parallels Ka'ahumanu on Saturday. Normal traffic flow will resume early Sunday morning.
