Man arrested in shooting

Police arrested a 27-year-old man late Tuesday in connection with an attempted murder shooting in Waialua Oct. 9.

Officers took the man into custody at the Wahiawa police station. He was also arrested on suspicion of committing a firearms violation.

The shooting took place Oct. 9 at Kukea Circle, police said. A 26-year-old Wahiawa man was shot on the left side of his face just below the mouth, police said. The man was taken to The Queen's Medical Center.

Investigators say the shooting may be drug-related.

Fire destroys family's home

Fire destroyed a Wai'anae home yesterday afternoon and may have killed the family's pet dog.

The fire at 86-164 Ma'ili'ili Road was reported at 1:30 p.m. Firefighters initially were told the house was abandoned, but when they arrived at the scene they discovered that it was occupied, said fire spokesman Capt. Kenison Tejada.

A 21-year-old man who was in a second-floor room escaped before flames engulfed the structure. Tejada said the man's parents were not home at the time of the fire.

The fire was brought under control at 1:48 p.m. and extinguished at 2:53 p.m. Damage was estimated at $120,000 to the building and contents, Tejada said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, but Tejada said it appeared that the blaze began in the home's first floor.

The family's pet Chihuahua, who had recently given birth, was not accounted for after the fire, Tejada said. The dog's puppies were with one of the homeowners and were not injured, Tejada said.

The American Red Cross was assisting the family with food, clothes and lodging.

The suspect is awaiting trial for offenses unrelated to the September burglary. Police made the arrest based on fingerprints recovered from louvers that the burglar removed to gain entry into the classroom.
