Copter rescues man on Moloka'i

A 62-year-old Pukalani man was rescued by helicopter yesterday after being stranded overnight on a remote, rocky shore on the north side of Moloka'i.

The man suffered scrapes and bruises but otherwise appeared healthy as he was taken by ambulance to Moloka'i General Hospital in Kaunakakai, said Department of Fire Control Assistant Fire Chief Greg Chong Kee.

The man became stranded on the rocky shore below the high cliffs at Halawa Bay after his rubber raft overturned Monday evening, said Chong Kee.

A fishing boat spotted him waving shortly after 11 a.m. yesterday and notified authorities, he said. The department's Kahului-based rescue helicopter picked up the man about an hour later.

Sewage spills in Lahaina

LAHAINA, Maui — Maui County reported yesterday that heavy rains on Tuesday caused a sewage discharge of about 185,000 gallons in Lahaina.

The collection system for Lahaina Wastewater Pump Station No. 1 could not handle the increased flow of rainwater, officials said, resulting in the discharge of untreated wastewater at a manhole located on Honoapi'ilani Highway south of Halawai Drive.

The overflow entered a storm drain that discharged into an old cane field makai of the highway. The state Health Department was notified, the standing water removed and the area disinfected, according to the county.
