Wai'anae rallies past Campbell for top seed

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Chad Rodrigues caught a 42-yard touchdown pass from Addison Popa on fourth-and-12 with 1:45 remaining last night to lift the Wai'anae High School football team to a pulsating 25-24 victory over Campbell at Wai'anae's Raymond Torii Field.

The win means Wai'anae and Campbell will share the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Red Conference-West championship, with Wai'anae earning the West's No. 1 seed in the upcoming playoffs. Both teams are 6-2 overall, 5-2 in the OIA Red-West.

Last night's game was a knock-down, drag-out affair with both offenses trading big blows. After Rodrigues' late touchdown, Campbell advanced to the Wai'anae 48-yard line, but the Sabers had four straight incompletions and lost the ball on downs with 28 seconds left.

The Seariders faced a similar outcome on the previous series, but Popa found Rodrigues open on a crossing pattern and Rodrigues broke outside and outran two Campbell defenders to the end zone. Four plays earlier, Popa hit Nathaniel Russell on a 19-yard pass on third-and-13.

"The first one was a slant, and the second one was the same kind of play," Popa said. "The coaches made the right calls at the right time."

Wai'anae coach Danny Matsumoto said his defensive coordinator, Bryant Ginoza, made the right calls all game long. The Seariders held Mapa Malupo, the Red-West's leading rusher, to just 21 yards on 11 carries. Campbell's other big ground gainer, Shauncey Saito, finished with 32 yards on 12 carries. The Sabers entered the game averaging an O'ahu-high 318 rushing yards per game, but managed only 105 last night.

"I give my coordinator (Ginoza) credit for that," Matsumoto said. "We knew they had a real strong running game, but Bryant came up with a good scheme and planned a good game."

Said Campbell coach Tumoana Kenesey: "They have the No. 1 rushing defense (in the OIA), and they lived up to it. They took away one of the key aspects of our offense, although we were able to adapt and throw the ball."

Sabers quarterback Jonah Canionero completed 11 of 22 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns, the last one a 30-yard strike to Prentiss Anderson, which helped give Campbell a 24-19 lead with 3:50 remaining.

Sautia Lave had given Wai'anae a 19-17 lead on a 2-yard touchdown run with seven seconds left in the third quarter. The extra-point attempt failed. The Sabers were up 17-13 after Canionero's 11-yard touchdown pass to Ali'i Basham with 7:38 remaining in the third quarter.
