Kamehameha's defense tightened the screws on Iolani in a 28-0 win in Interscholastic League of Honolulu interdivisional football last night at Aloha Stadium.

The Warriors (4-0 ILH, 7-0 overall), ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser Top 10, contained the No. 5 Raiders (3-1, 5-2), who had averaged 369 yards per game, to 197 yards. In fact, Iolani's deepest penetration of the game was to the Warriors' 29 and that came in the closing seconds of the game.

"Second half, they manhandled us up front," Iolani coach Wendell Look said. "They beat us at our own game. They wore us down."

Kamehameha also had three interceptions, one each by Kaeo Drummondo, Kekoa Smith and Guyton Galdeira. Drummondo had a 19-yard return for a TD nullified by an illegal block.

The Warriors also registered two sacks of Iolani quarterback Robert Mageo, one each by defensive end Karl Noa and linebacker Matt Morgado.

"We're glad to have this win because Iolani is real tough,"Noa said.

And if the Warriors didn't sack Mageo, they pressured him heavily. Linebacker Micah Lau and lineman JP Kennedy got to Mageo just as he released the ball for incomplete passes.

Iolani running back Raynold Stowers, who entered the game leading all ILH rushers with 588 yards, was held to 61 in 10 carries. Trailing from the start, Iolani had to revert to the passing game to play catchup, thus limiting his rushes.

Meanwhile, the Warriors rambled for 346 yards, 222 on the ground. Quarterback Caleb Spencer had 199 yards in offense (115 passing and 84 rushing). He scored Kamehameha's final TD on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter.

The Warriors were meticulous on offense, using zone and trap plays behind the offensive line of center Reyn Kaupiko, guards Brennen Carvalho and Shane Cazimero and tackles RJ Willing and Elwin Freitas. That allowed fullback Travis Beyer to rush for 58 yards on 10 carries, including the first TD of the game on a 1-yard run. But Beyer left after one carry in the second half with a sprained ankle. He is expected back next week, Kamehameha coach Kanani Souza said.

Receiver Keoni Ruth, who scored the second TD in the second quarter, lined up in the backfield and scored on a 3-yard run. He left the game later because of cramping. He is expected to return next week, Souza said.

But it wasn't as if the Warriors lost a step. Sy Cullen filled in at running back and got 49 yards on 12 carries.

Josh Vierra, spelling Ruth on punt returns, took one 59 yards to the Iolani 8 to set up the Warriors' third TD in the third quarter, a 17-yard run by Cullen.
