UH-Hilo stops Hawai'i Pacific in PacWest volleyball

Emily Hutchinson and Tiffanie Ollison each had 16 kills to lead the University of Hawai'i-Hilo to a

25-30, 30-27, 30-26, 30-26 victory over No. 25 Hawai'i Pacific in a Pacific West Conference women's volleyball match at Hilo last night.

Hilo is 7-12 overall and 3-4 in the Pacific West. Hawai'i Pacific is 9-6 and 4-2.

Hilo's Cheriesse Shiroma added 14 kills and eight block assists, while Heidi Fabritz had 12 kills and a team-high 20 digs.

The Vulcans had 10 service aces, including three each by Ollison, Hutchinson and Megan Denman.

Susy Garbelotti led HPU with 23 kills. Teisa Fotu added 16 kills, while Sandra Brunke had 11.

The Vulcans and Sea Warriors play at Hilo again tonight.

BYUH wins: Brigham Young-Hawai'i's women's volleyball team struggled early against Montana State-Billings, but still won in three games at Alterowitz Gymnasium in Billings, Mont., last night.

Despite trailing in each of the first two games, the No. 4-ranked Seasiders won the Pacific West Conference match, 30-28, 30-27, 30-23.

Ashley Moeai had a match-high 15 kills for BYUH. Chun Yi Lin and Yu Chuan Weng each added 13 kills.

In the first game, the Yellowjackets led by as many as eight points, and held a 28-26 lead before the Seasiders scored the final four points for the victory.

In the second game, Billings led 19-18 before BYUH's Crystal Casebolt served six points in a row to give the Seasiders control of the game.

BYUH never trailed in the third game, and lead by as many as nine points.

Billings' Kristen Janney had 19 kills and a match-high five aces.

BYUH is 15-1 overall, 5-1 in the Pacific West. Billings is 6-11 and 2-4. The two teams play again tonight.

The Pacific West Conference cleared the confusion over the standings yesterday and said the Oct. 12 BYUH-HPU match should have been counted as a non-conference match.

The final match of the season between BYUH and HPU on Nov. 16 at St. Andrew's Priory will be the conference counter.

Chaminade stops Western New Mexico: Kahala Kabalis had 18 kills and 23 digs to lead Chaminade to a 30-28, 19-20, 30-24, 30-17 Pacific West victory over Western New Mexico at Silver City, N.M., last night.

Valasi Sepulona added 16 kills and Kuumomi Kaaihue 14 for the Silverswords.

Chaminade is 12-3 overall and 6-2 in the PacWest. Western New Mexico is 14-9 and 0-6.

Chaminade and Western New Mexico play again tonight.

TENNIS

BYUH players in final: Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Jan Krejci and Adrienn Hegedus yesterday advanced to the men's and women's finals, respectively, at the Omni Hotels National Small College Tennis Championships at Corpus Christi, Texas.

Krejci, the tournament's top seed, defeated Southwest Baptist's (Mo.) Andras Bori, 7-6 (6), 6-3, in the semifinals and will play Lynn's (Fla.) Marius Calugara in today's final at H.E.B. Tennis Center.

Hegedus, seeded second, defeated Lynn's Kristina Triska, 6-1, 6-1, and will play top-seeded Zsofia Golopencza of Armstrong Atlantic State (Ga.) in the the final.

In doubles yesterday, Krejci and Peter Madarassy finished third with a 9-7 victory over Armstrong Atlantic State's Dale White and Achim Roth. Hegedus and Amy Sun lost to Victoria Domina and Brenda Magnetti of Ouchita Baptist (Ark.) 9-8 (6) in the semifinals.
