'Bibliography' is Hawai'i publishers' choice

Advertiser Staff

 •  Points to ponder for book club readers

Are you reading "Year of Wonders" by Geraldine Brooks? Questions to think about:

What would make someone stay in a plague village and risk death?

If you haven't reached the end yet, jot down how you think the book will end. Later, compare — what led you to the conclusion you drew?

Consider the survivor. What attributes does Anna have that allow her to move on in the fact of such loss?

Does this story relate to our time?

Remember: The reading period is through Nov. 1. To send comments, write Wanda Adams, Books Editor, The Advertiser, P.O. Box 3110, Honolulu, HI 96802. Fax: 525-8055. E-mail: bookclub@honoluluadvertiser.com, or experience the book club online.

The 2002 Ka Palapala Po'okela Awards, recognizing excellence in publishing in the Islands, were announced Friday by the Hawai'i Book Publishers Association.

The winner of the Samuel M. Kamakau Award for the Hawai'i Book of the Year is "Hawaiian National Bibliography, 1780-1900: Volume 3, 1851-1880," compiled and annotated by David W. Forbes, University of Hawai'i Press. The bibliography is an ambitious project to document all printed works touching on the history of the Hawaiian Islands — from the first printed notice mentioning the Islands to the beginning of the 20th century. Volume 3 covers the last years of the rule of Kamehameha III, the reigns of Kamehameha IV, Kamehameha V, and Lunalilo, and the first seven years of the Kalakaua era. All books, pamphlets, single-sheet publications and significant periodical articles are included. Forbes has been in the rare-book field for more than 30 years. He is the author of "Encounters with Paradise: Views of Hawai'i and Its People, 1778-1941" and numerous short articles and essays. Iris Wiley served as the project editor on the work.

Artist and author Herb Kawainue Kane, known for his realistic art works documenting Hawaiian history and culture, received the John Dominis Holt Award for lifetime achievement. Kane, who lives and works in Captain Cook on the Big Island, creates original paintings and collateral works (poster, cards and such), has published several books and was a principal in the effort to launch the Hokule'a voyaging canoe.
