Injury jinx strikes Warriors once again

While Tulsa's losing streak continued, the University of Hawai'i football team also saw an unfortunate streak continue last night.

Two more significant players for the Warriors suffered injuries in UH's 37-14 victory over the Golden Hurricane last night at Aloha Stadium.

Safeties Hyrum Peters and Leonard Peters, who are not related, did not play in the second half.

Hyrum Peters, the starting strong safety, suffered a stinger in his neck for the second consecutive game. The junior from Kahuku leads the team with four interceptions, including three returns for touchdowns.

Leonard Peters did not start, but played at free safety in the first half. He sat out the second half with what was described as a bruised abdomen. UH trainers said it may be related to the internal abdominal injuries that kept him out of several games earlier this season.

Also, junior defensive end Houston Ala did not play because of a sprained left ankle. Ala, who leads the team with four sacks, was listed as a starter on the pre-game depth chart.

At least one UH player has suffered a significant injury in every game so far this season.

• Record night: Hawai'i quarterback Tim Chang became the Warriors' all-time leader in three categories last night.

With 403 yards, he surpassed Dan Robinson to become the new record-holder for career passing yards. Only a sophomore, Chang already has 6,267 yards through 20 games. Robinson passed for 6,038 yards in 25 games from 1997-99.

The 403 yards also gave Chang 6,316 yards in total offense, surpassing Garrett Gabriel's record of 6,181 set in 34 games from 1987-90.

With 34 completions (in 49 attempts), Chang also boosted his career total to 479, breaking Robinson's mark of 453.

• Leading receivers: Sophomore slotback Britton Komine made his second consecutive start last night and led the Warriors in receiving yards for the second consecutive game.

Komine caught nine passes for 140 yards. In the only two starts of his UH career, he has 17 receptions for 398 yards.

Also, senior receiver Justin Colbert surpassed 100 yards in receiving for the second consecutive game. He caught seven passes for 103 yards last night, giving him 15 receptions for 223 yards in the last two games.

• Rare reception: Tulsa center Anthony Taylor made the first reception of his career last night, although not by design.

A pass by reserve quarterback James Kilian bounced off umpire Steve Burks and into the arms of Taylor for an eight-yard gain.

• Rare misses: Tulsa kicker Brad DeVault missed on both his field-goal attempts last night. He missed from 41 yards in the second quarter, and then from 42 yards in the fourth quarter.

Prior to last night, DeVault was 5-for-5 in field goals, the only kicker in the WAC without a miss.

• That's entertainment: The Kalani High School marching band performed at halftime. The UH marching band performed before the game.

Les Ceballos, a teacher at Kamehameha Schools, sang the national anthem and Hawai'i Pono'i.
