Bank robbery charges pending

A 41-year-old man will be charged by federal prosecutors in connection with the robberies of four banks. The man was arrested Friday by police on outstanding state warrants and as a suspect in the Aug. 22 robbery of American Savings Bank's Liliha branch.

He also will be charged, possibly today, in connection with the Aug. 29 robbery of American Savings Bank in Kaimuki, the Sept. 17 robbery of ASB's Dillingham Boulevard branch and the Oct. 4 robbery of First Hawaiian Bank in Kaimuki.

Police, meanwhile, are working with surveillance photos of a man who robbed a Bank of Hawai'i branch at Kamehameha Shopping Center on Saturday at 2:35 p.m. Shopping center security reported seeing the man in the parking lot for more than five hours before the robbery.

Waipahu girl hit by pickup dies

A 9-year-old Waipahu girl, who was hit by a pickup truck Saturday night at the intersection of Pupukahi Street and Farrington Highway, died last night at The Queen's Medical Center.

The medical examiner's office today identified the girl as Christina Milne. She was pronounced dead at 11:51 p.m.

Police vehicular homicide investigators said Milne was hit by a 1998 Toyota Tacoma pickup that was turning left onto Farrington Highway from Pupukahi. The 64-year-old male driver told police the girl ran in front of his truck. Police said the color of the girl's clothing and street lighting in the area may be factors.

Milne's death is the 54th traffic fatality of the year on O'ahu and seventh traffic fatality this month.

Examiner identifies drowning victims

A woman who drowned off Mokule‘ia Beach yesterday has been identified by the medical examiner’s office as Francine Perry, 52.

Police said Perry, a regular camper at Mokule‘ia Beach, was unable to make it back to shore while swimming in rough surf. Her body was recovered at 10:47 a.m.

The examiner today also identified the 48-year-old man whose body was found in high surf off Kea‘au Beach Park in Makaha on Saturday as Sun Woong Kwon of Salt Lake.

HECO replacing utility poles in LÅ‘ie

Repair crews were busy today replacing four downed utility poles that closed Kamehameha Highway last night near the Polynesian Cultural Center in La‘ie.

Because the poles carried power and telephone lines, it was not known how long repairs would take. Police estimated it could be two days before the highway is re-opened.

Hawaiian Electric Co. spokesman Fred Kobashikawa said the poles were expected to be up by 1 p.m. today. Verizon Hawai‘i spokeswoman Ann Nishida did not know when phone line repairs would be completed, but also said there had not been any complaints about lost service.

The poles were reported down at 8:50 p.m. yesterday near the La‘ie Village Shopping Center. Police said traffic was routed off the highway and around the cultural center while repairs were being made. Electricity for all but 10 of 390 customers was restored by 1 a.m. today, Kobashikawa said.

The poles fell when a guide wire snapped on one of them, Kobashikawa said. When the first pole fell, it pulled the other three with it, he said.
