SMU hammers Hawai'i in WAC women's soccer, 4-0

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i suffered its worst loss this season, falling to Southern Methodist, 4-0, yesterday in a Western Athletic Conference women's soccer match in Dallas.

The four goals are the most allowed by the Hawai'i defense this season.

The Mustangs scored on Amanda Jordan's goal in the 41st minute, and second-half goals by Jill Heinemann (61:27), Lauren Mussallem (72:16) and Ashley VanMeter (77:04)

"We played them tough all game long," said Hawai'i coach Pinsoom Tenzing. "The three second-half goals were completely against the grain of play; they were counterattacking and they caught us off guard."

For the third time this season, the Rainbow Wahine were shut out, with leading scorers Natasha Kai and Arlene Devitt getting only three shots on goal between the two.

"They played really well until the end," Tenzing said. "When we beat Rice (1-0) it didn't feel like a victory. We lost big time against SMU but it doesn't feel like a loss because the kids played so well."

Hawai'i (5-7-2, 2-2) plays Texas Christian today in a non-conference match. SMU improved to 8-4-3, 4-0-1.
