Jobless rate in Hawai'i rises to 4.3%

Associated Press

Hawai'i's unemployment rate last month edged slightly up from the previous month, according to the latest figures released yesterday by the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.

The state's September jobless figure was 4.3 percent, up from the 4.2 percent unemployment rate in August, but still well below the national rate of 5.4 percent for September.

Hawai'i's jobless rate for September 2001 was 4.6 percent.

The state's unemployment rate has been lower than the national jobless rate for 10 consecutive months, according to the state Labor Department.

The City and County of Honolulu had the lowest jobless rate at 3.9 percent, followed by Maui County at 4.7 percent, Kaua'i County at 5 percent and Hawai'i County at 5.8 percent.

More than 500,000 people in Hawai'i were employed last month, compared with fewer than 26,000 who were unemployed.
