The shootings on Honohono Street were witnessed by a young child, police said, but the child was not injured.

Police said they believe the gunman, who was in his 40s, shot the two women and then shot himself in an apartment on Honohono Street. The shootings were on the second floor of a two-story building that has three units.

Police said the call came in at 9:38 p.m., from someone at a Waimalu liquor store who said that a person was being shot at the Honohono Street apartment.

Police Sgt. Roger Nitta said that the child had called a relative, who went to the liquor store and called police.

When police arrived they found the child outside. The child told police that the mother had been shot.

Police late last night did not know the motive for the shootings.

The dead woman was in her 60s, police said. The dead woman, who was shot at least once in the head, was the younger woman's mother and the child's grandmother. She was found dead in a hallway.

The younger woman, in her 40s, was in critical condition at The Queen's Medical Center.

It was not known if the couple were married, but neighbors said they lived together and were in the process of moving here from Seattle.

The gunman and the younger woman were found lying next to each other on the floor of a bedroom. The wounded woman was shot in the head, neck, chest and in her left side, according to emergency services personnel.

The man had a bullet wound in the neck.

Homicide Lt. Bill Kato said a small semi-automatic pistol was recovered at the scene.

Barbara Ngumezi, a neighbor, said, she was in her bedroom watching TV when she heard three popping sounds. She said she heard nothing unusual coming from her neighbors' apartment before or after the shots.
