Point guard commits to UH basketball

In another point toward the right direction, Logan Lee committed to play for the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team last night.

Lee is a 6-foot-2, 172-pound point guard currently in his freshman year at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas.

He is expected to join the Rainbow Warriors for the 2003-04 season, and will have three seasons of NCAA Division I eligibility.

"Hawai'i is a great program with great coaches," Lee said. "That was the deciding factor for me. Everything else — the perfect weather, all the nice people — that's just a plus."

As a senior at John Marshall High in San Antonio last season, Lee averaged 17 points, 10 assists and 7 rebounds per game, according to head coach Terry Morris. Lee was the district's most valuable player, and a second-team all-state selection.

"He can be so good, it's scary," Morris said. "His strength is making everybody better. He can shoot, and he has a natural instinct for getting the ball to the right man at the right time."

In July, Lee had 15 points, 4 assists and 4 rebounds in a Texas high school all-star game. "He should have been the MVP of the game, but his team lost," Morris said.

Lee received several offers from "mid-major" Division I programs out of high school, but turned them down to attend South Plains, a nationally ranked junior college.

"I wasn't real satisfied with the offers I was getting," he said. "I felt I needed a better situation, and when Hawai'i came along, I knew that was the place."

According to South Plains assistant coach Josh Newman, Lee has already earned the starting point guard position for this season.

"He's left-handed, and he can knock down the (3-pointer) or get it to the open man," Newman said. "He really understands the game; he seems to always make the right decisions."

Newman said Lee is "more than capable" of replacing Mark Campbell, UH's starting point guard who is a senior this season.

Lee is the second player in two weeks to commit to the 'Bows. Jeff Blackett, a 6-8 forward at Salt Lake Community College (Utah), committed to UH last week.

Both players said they will sign their official letters of intent during basketball's early signing period, Nov. 13-20.
