HHSAA extends TV deal through 2004-05

By Dennis Anderson
Advertiser Staff Writer

The Hawai'i High School Athletic Association and Hawai'i Sports Network have extended their television deal for two years at the current price — $50,000 per year.

HSN will produce at least 15 telecasts per school year of state high school championship events through 2004-05. "That's the minimum," stressed Chris Dey, HSN president. "We have done 21 and 18 the past two years."

The channel will change, from KFVE to Oceanic 16. "There are fewer scheduling conflicts on Oceanic, so we can do more events live," Dey explained, "and Oceanic is statewide now, in more than 300,000 homes."

The 2002-03 schedule will start next month with volleyball live from Hilo and conclude in May with girls basketball semifinals and championship games live from Stan Sheriff Center. In 2004, Dey said, the girls' basketball coverage also will include quarterfinals.

"We are absolutely thrilled to be a part of it and capture the memories," Dey said.

Baseball on Maui will not be telecast next spring because of cost factors, Dey said.

The 2002-03 telecasts schedule so far:

  • Nov. 16 — Boys volleyball championship from Hilo (live).
  • Nov. 23 — Girls volleyball championship from Hilo (live).
  • Dec. 1 — Football semifinals from Aloha Stadium (two-day delay).
  • Dec. 8 — Football championship from Aloha Stadium (two-day delay).
  • Feb. 15 — Boys soccer championship from Wapi'o Peninsula Soccer Park (live).
  • March 1 — Boys basketball championship from Blaisdell Arena (live).

  • March 15 -— Cheerleading from Stan Sheriff Center (live).
  • May 17 — Boys and girls track and field championships from Kamehameha (seven-day delay).

  • May 16 — Girls basketball championship from Stan Sheriff Center (live).
