Pearl City, Kahuku to defend titles in volleyball

By Stacy Kaneshiro
Advertiser Staff Writer

Pearl City's boys and Kahuku's girls are back to open defense of their respective O'ahu Interscholastic Association volleyball titles this weekend.

First round competition starts Friday with the boys at McKinley, the girls at Radford and the JV girls at Farrington. The top two teams from each division drew first-round byes and begin play Saturday.

Saturday's matches are the most crucial because despite how the team finished in regular season play, a loss will eliminate them from the tournament.

The Chargers (9-1) are seeking their fifth title in seven years. They are the West's top seed in the boys' tournament and earned a bye.

The Red Raiders (8-2) are the East's third seed in the girls' tournament, so they must play in the first round, instead of having a bye.

Kalani (9-1), which lost to Kahuku in last year's championship, is the East's top seed. Although it tied Moanalua (9-1) to share the division crown, the Falcons won the head-to-head tiebreaker.

The top four teams from the boys and top four from the girls advance to their respective state tournaments.

In the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, the boys resume second-round play today through Oct. 30, while the girls start their second round Thursday.

Kamehameha's girls won the regular-season title at 11-0 and have clinched one of the league's two state berths.

Iolani's boys (11-0) won the regular season to also clinch one of two state berths.

The second-round tournaments determine the league's second state tournament berths.
