UH soccer team stops Texas Christian in OT, 2-1

Erin Quattromani scored a golden goal 50 seconds into overtime to lift the University of Hawai'i women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Texas Christian at Fort Worth, Texas, yesterday.

Hawai'i is 6-7-2, TCU is 2-10-5.

The Rainbow Wahine got the ball into TCU territory when Arlene Devitt found Seline Williams, who played the ball to Quattromani. Quattromani buried the shot from eight yards to end the match in the 91st minute.

Jenny Swanson scored at 53 minutes, 14 seconds to give TCU a 1-0 lead.

Pam Fong tied the game on a breakaway at 55:41. Noelle Takemoto started the play by advancing the ball to Devitt, who centered the ball to Fong in the penalty area.

VOLLEYBALL

BYUH wins: Fourth-ranked Brigham Young-Hawai'i swept winless Western New Mexico last night in Silver City, N.M., 30-28, 30-22, 30-26, to improve to 17-1 overall and 6-1 in the Pacific West Conference.

Yu Chuan Weng had 21 kills for BYUH, and Chun Yi Lin added 14.

Western New Mexico is 14-11 and 0-7. The two teams play again tonight in a non-conference game.

Chaminade sweeps: Chaminade's Valasi Sepulona had 20 kills and five digs in a 30-24, 30-21, 30-26 victory over host Montana State-Billings yesterday.

Chaminade, 14-3 overall and 6-2 in the PacWest, meets MSU-Billings in a non-conference match tonight.

Chaminade's Kahala Kabalis yesterday was named Pacific West Conference volleyball player of the week after leading the Silverswords to two road victories.

Kabalis had 18 kills and a .245 hitting percentage in Chaminade's win over Western New Mexico on Friday, and posted a match-high 27 kills and 19 digs on Saturday.

UH's Kahumoku honored: Junior Lily Kahumoku was named the Western Athletic Conference volleyball player of the week after leading the University of Hawai'i to a sweep of its first road trip of the season.

Kahumoku hit .382 for the unbeaten Rainbow Wahine as they swept Texas-El Paso and Southern Methodist.

She averaged six kills per game and 4.17 digs for the two matches. Kahumoku had 25 kills and nine digs in the sweep of UTEP and was three blocks short of a triple-double.

GOLF

UH men last: The University of Hawai'i golf team is 17th after the first day of the Barona Collegiate Cup in Lakeside, Calif., yesterday.

Sophomore Ben Douglas leads the Warriors with a (68-79) 147. Shawn Wills of Denver leads the tournament at (67-68)135.

Denver is in first at 559, six strokes ahead of host San Diego State. UH shot a 599.

SWIMMING

WAC honors for Chen: University of Hawai'i freshman Yan Chen was named the WAC swimming and diving athlete of the week yesterday for her efforts last weekend in a dual meet with Pacific at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Chen, a native of the People's Republic of China, won the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.25) and the 200 individual medley (2:04.72), and finished second in the 200 butterfly (2:04.22).

The Rainbow Wahine fell to Pacific in the meet, 171-113.
