Rainbow women host Kapolei tourney

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i's Rainbow Wahine Fall Classic will be Tuesday and Wednesday at Kapolei Golf Course.

The 17 teams will play 36 holes the first day and 18 the final day. Play begins at 7:30 both mornings.

The field includes seventh-ranked New Mexico, 11th-ranked Cal, No. 21 UCLA and No. 25 New Mexico State, which features Alena Sharp, ranked eighth individually in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.

Hawai'i is coming off one of its finest rounds. Earlier this month, the Rainbows jumped four places the final day of the Heather Farr Memorial Tournament, to finish 12th.

Senior Bobbie Arakawa, a Punahou graduate, shot a career-best 74 and freshman Tara Chappell, from Carmel, Calif., closed with a 76 to jump-start a team score of 313 — 17 shots better than Hawai'i's opening round.

Chappell tied for 32nd. Arakawa shared 43rd with senior teammate Laura DuLucia, from Las Vegas.

The Rainbow Wahine finished last in their first two tournaments. Junior Rene Krause, from Oregon, tied for 20th at the Shanico Invitational in Corvallis, Ore., while Chappell finished 44th. At the Pioneer Highlands Ranch Intercollegiate, Chappell tied for 13th and junior Megan McGuinness, from Scottsdale, Ariz., placed 35th.

The UH men will host the UH/Turtle Bay Intercollegiate Nov. 4 and 5 on the North Shore.
