Ma'ili man arrested in Lagoon Drive incident

By Rod Ohira

Police yesterday arrested a 25-year-old Ma'ili man and recovered a stolen rental car that had drawn gunfire from a sheriff's deputy when it was driven through a Honolulu International Airport security checkpoint last week on Lagoon Drive.

Police found the car at Kapolei Shopping Center after they responded to a "suspicious vehicle" tip.

The tipster told police about the car, which had what appeared to be bullet holes in a partially shattered windshield, at about 5:30 p.m. and later identified the driver. The man was caught after trying to flee police on foot.

He was arrested on suspicion of second-degree possession of a dangerous drug and drug paraphernalia and is being held on five outstanding warrants, including two for traffic violations, with bail totaling $4,000.

Herman Moore, chief internal affairs investigator for the state's Department of Public Safety, said the two sheriff's deputies who were staffing the security checkpoint Oct. 17 would likely be called to identify the suspect in a lineup today. The deputies returned to regular duties Wednesday, Moore added.

The Lagoon Drive incident occurred after the deputies discovered the car was stolen and asked the driver to get out.

The driver drove forward, made a U-turn and sped through the checkpoint. One of the deputies fired three shots at the oncoming vehicle.
