Sailor accused of beating infant

Police expect to charge a 23-year-old Navy man today with first-degree assault in connection with critical injuries sustained by a 1-month-old boy, who has been at Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children since early Monday.

The infant was diagnosed with multiple fractured ribs, a fractured skull and internal abdominal bleeding, police said.

The sailor, a submariner, was arrested yesterday at 10:45 a.m.

Rescuers search for missing man

Fire Rescue specialists were assisting police today in a search for a missing 49-year-old man, whose car was found last night in the 3800 block of Tantalus Drive.

Officer Joe Self of the Honolulu Police Department's missing persons detail said the man was reported missing at 9 p.m. yesterday after he failed to show up for a doctor's appointment and a meeting with his brother and sister. Firefighters searched a hiking trail from midnight to 2 a.m., Self said.

The Fire Department's helicopter and a rescue company resumed searching today at 8:30 a.m. and had not found the man by 11 a.m.

Man, 22, accused of assault at bar

A 22-year-old Makiki Heights man was arrested by police on suspicion that he assaulted two people last night at a Kaka'ako area bar.

A verbal argument at the Hibiscus Club, 350 Ward Ave., turned violent at about 11:30 p.m. as one man, 30, was struck in the head with a bottle and his wife, 30, punched in the face, police said. The woman was treated at The Queen's Medical Center and released while her husband refused medical treatment.

The man was arrested on two counts of second-degree assault at 12:01 a.m. today. He has been released pending further investigation.

Police escort-biker injured in spill

A Honolulu Police solo bike officer riding in a motorcade escort for Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was injured yesterday afternoon when he lost control of his motorcycle on H-1 Freeway westbound near the Houghtailing-Palama exit, police said.

The 29-year-old officer, whose name was not released, suffered a leg injury when the motorcycle went out from under him. He was taken to The Queen's Medical Center for treatment.
