UH rallies past FSU, 31-21

FRESNO, Calif. ­ The University of Hawai'i scored 22 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to rally past Fresno State, 31-21, in a Western Athletic Conference football game tonight at Bulldog Stadium.

Hawai'i is 6-2 overall, 5-1 in the WAC. Fresno State is 4-5 and 2-2.

Hawai'i trailed 21-9 entering the fourth quarter. UH quarterback Tim Chang hit Justin Colbert on a 58-yard pass play, and the Warriors closed to 21-16 with 13:43 remaining.

Hawai'i took a 24-21 lead with 2:25 to go when Britton Komine caught a 13-yard pass from Chang in the end zone. Chang hit Komine for the two-point conversion.

Fresno got the ball back and drove to the Hawai'i 38, but Kelvin Millhouse intercepted a Paul Pinegar pass in the end zone with 51 seconds to go.

With 41 seconds to go, John West then ran 81 yards for a touchdown and Hawai'i took a 31-21 lead.

Chang was 36 of 61 for 462 yards, cementing his place among the nation's leaders in total offense.

Kicker Justin Ayat kicked field goals of 39, 50 and 26 yards in the first half.

Actually, Fresno State stifled Chang and Hawaiis high-powered passing attack ­ which was ranked second in the nation ­ until the fourth quarter, when the Warriors amassed 283 of their 546 total yards.

Hawai'i led 9-7 at halftime, but Fresno State scored on an 8-yard run by Marque Davis and a 10-yard blocked punt return by Dee Meza in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs lost at home for just the fifth time in 32 games under coach Pat Hill.
