Police find car that sped by airport security

Police last night found a car that had drawn gunfire from sheriff's deputies when it sped through a security checkpoint at Honolulu International Airport on Oct. 17.

Investigators said the car was found in the Kapolei area, and detectives were on the scene last night.

State sheriff's deputies fired shots at the car when it sped through a security checkpoint on Lagoon Drive at the east end of the airport, injuring the two officers.

The car, with an unknown number of occupants, had been reported as stolen.

The deputies, ages 30 and 49, suffered cuts and bruises but were not seriously hurt, paramedics said.


Tractor driver hurt when rig overturns

Kunia Road near the entrance to Schofield's Lyman Gate was closed to Waipahu-bound traffic out of Wahiawa for several hours yesterday after a tractor-semitrailer hauling concrete blocks overturned.

The driver of the RHS Lee Inc. truck was transported by helicopter to The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition after the 8:19 a.m. incident. Traffic to Wahiawa on Kunia Road was not affected.


Man charged with firearms offense

Police have charged a 36-year-old Wai'anae man with being in possession of a firearm when he fled from police on May 26, 2001, after a traffic stop.

William Soares was charged Wednesday and is being held in lieu of $15,000 bail for the firearms offense and three outstanding warrants.


Identity released for Hanauma victim

The medical examiner's office yesterday identified the 72-year-old man from Hokkaido, Japan, who died at Straub Clinic and Hospital Wednesday after being pulled unconscious from Hanauma Bay as Yasuji Nomura.

Lifeguards found Nomura's body floating about 20 yards offshore at 12:05 p.m. Emergency personnel tried to resuscitate him. He was pronounced dead at 1:13 p.m.


Police escort-biker injured in spill

A Honolulu Police solo bike officer riding in a motorcade escort for Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was injured yesterday afternoon when he lost control of his motorcycle on H-1 Freeway westbound near the Houghtailing-Palama exit, police said.

The 29-year-old officer, whose name was not released, suffered a leg injury when the motorcycle went out from under him. He was taken to The Queen's Medical Center for treatment.

A police department spokeswoman said the injuries suffered by the four-year veteran of the department were not life threatening, and that the officer was expected to recover soon.

President Arroyo was on her way to an appearance at the Waipahu Community Center following a lunch with Gov. Ben Cayetano when the incident occurred at about 1:45 p.m.

Arroyo arrived in Honolulu yesterday.

She is to leave today for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Mexico.
