The state Health Department's Tuberculosis Control Program has been selected for a new federal research initiative, officials said.
The program has been awarded a 10-year contract by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to participate in the TB Epidemiological Studies Consortium.
The federal contract amounts to $1.2 million for Hawai'i's TB program, and the figure will increase on the basis of research projects done locally, the officials said.
Dr. Jessie Wing, chief of the Hawai'i program, said that as a member of the consortium, the state will be able to participate in the highest level of research.
