A civilian helicopter with three people on board crashed today on the Schofield Barracks Military Reservation above Wahiawa, the U.S. Army said.

The Hughes 500 helicopter went down near Ka‘aumakua Ridge above Schofield’s East Range.

Two people were taken to Wahiawa General Hospital and the third walked away from the crash, said Capt. Stacy Bathrick, a spokeswoman for the 25th Infantry Division (Light) and U.S. Army, Hawai‘i. The pilot had head and leg injuries and was admitted to the hospital. The passenger was released after being treated for undisclosed injuries.

The helicopter had been hired to ferry two of the Army’s civilian environmental specialists to a remote area, Bathrick said.

“They were conducting routine, quarterly environmental efforts that involved monitoring endangered species,” Bathrick said.

The crash occured about 10:20 a.m. The wreckage was spotted about 11 a.m. by a search helicopter.

Medical evacuation helicopters with the 68th Medical Company as well as the Honolulu Fire Department’s Air 1 and Rescue 2 units were called to the scene.
