Together, UH teams score hat trick in WAC honors

Advertiser Staff

A successful week by University of Hawai'i teams led to three Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards and a national honor yesterday.

Kim Willoughby, a junior left-side hitter, was the AVCA/Sports Imports Division I National Player of the Week and the WAC Volleyball Player of the Week.

It was her second WAC honor this season. She was national Player of the Week twice last season.

She had at least 20 kills in each of Hawai'i's four victories last week, including 24- and 23-kill performances against Fresno State and Notre Dame.

UH remained No. 2 in this week's AVCA/USA Today Coaches Top 25 poll.

Tim Chang, sophomore quarterback, won his first WAC football Offensive Player of the Week award.

Chang threw for a career-high 462 yards and two touchdowns in the Warriors' 31-21 victory over Fresno State at Bulldog Stadium last Friday.

"It's a great honor, but the team deserves it," Chang said. "I can't throw to myself and, even if I could, I need the protection that my line gives me."

Natasha Kai, freshman forward, was the WAC Offensive Soccer Player of the Week for the third time this season.

Kai recorded her second hat trick of the season in a 5-1 win over Boise State. She added two more goals in a 5-0 victory over Nevada. She set team season records for points (31) and goals (14).
