Woman injured in Maui shark attack

KIHEI – A 60-year-old woman suffered deep cuts on her left foot after she was bitten today by what officials suspect was a shark.

The incident occurred before noon at Kamaole Beach Park I in Kihei.

The woman was swimming about 10 to 15 feet from shore when something grabbed ahold of her foot, said Maui County Water Safety Operations Supervisor Archie Kalepa. The water was murky from recent rains and she did not see what bit her, Kalepa said.

The woman, a part-time Maui resident, underwent surgery at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Several beaches along the popular South Maui shoreline were closed yesterday — normal protocol following a shark attack.
